Ayurvedic Treatment For Lungs

In Ayurveda, the lungs are primarily governed by the Kapha dosha. Any imbalance in the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) is believed to lead to various health issues, including lung diseases. Avlambaka Kapha, a specific subtype of the Kapha dosha, governs the lungs, respiratory system, and heart. It plays a crucial role in regulating the flow of Udana Vata and Prana Vayu. Imbalances in these foundational doshas can give rise to respiratory ailments such as Asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), Bronchitis, Pneumonia, and seasonal allergies. Ayurvedic management of lung diseases typically involves a combination of dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, herbal formulations, and practices such as Pranayama (breathing exercises) to balance the doshas and strengthen the respiratory system.

Some lung-related disorders in Ayurveda

Kaphaja Kasa (Cough due to Kapha imbalance)

Kaphaja Kasa is cough caused by an aggravation of the Kapha dosha. This type of cough is often associated with the production of thick and white sputum. Ayurvedic treatments for Kaphaja Kasa aim to pacify Kapha through diet, lifestyle, and herbal remedies.

Kshaya (Tuberculosis)

Although tuberculosis is not explicitly mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic texts, Ayurveda recognizes a condition called Kshaya, which refers to a wasting or degenerative disease. Some Ayurvedic herbs and therapies are believed to support overall health and well-being, which can be beneficial in conditions like tuberculosis.

Kasa (Cough)

Cough is a common symptom of various respiratory disorders. Ayurveda classifies cough into different types based on the dosha involved. Vata-type cough is dry and hacking, Pitta-type is associated with heat and yellowish sputum, and Kapha-type is characterised by white and slimy sputum.

Shwasa (Dyspnea)

Shwasa is a condition characterised by difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath. It is considered a Vata disorder in Ayurveda. Vata imbalance, along with aggravated Kapha, is believed to contribute to this condition.

Tamaka Shwasa (Bronchial Asthma)

Tamaka Shwasa is considered a type of Shwasa where there is a sudden onset of breathlessness. It is often associated with wheezing. Ayurvedic treatment aims at balancing Vata and Kapha doshas and improving lung function
